Synching with Latest Firmware

Postby mntbone » Sat Mar 31, 2012 2:56 pm

RTCOA is pushing 1.04.82 firmware.
Why is it that the windows app thinks that .77 is the latest?
Seems like these need to get in lock step.

Radiothermostat are enabling the new firmware one device at a time. Besides, 1.04.82 seems to be more targeted towards the CT80, not our 3M50s

That really doesn't answer my question.
And where do you find info that says .82 is a targeted release?
I cannot find any information...which is a problem IMO.

You can find your current firmware version in the "info" tab when accessing the thermostat. As for finding the targeted firmware I believe only support personnel/administrators can look up that information.

My point is that RTCOA should be telling the user community what is being changed with each release (i.e. release notes).
I am more than happy to keep my tstats in synch with latest IF I know what is being changed.
I don't want FW pushed to my tstats, esp. for remote locations, but am more than willing to manually update via tstat for windows if it recognizes that there is a later version avail for which I have release notes.
This big brother mentality with the FW needs to stop.

sure, and my bank account needs to enlarge. Don't like the product ? Don't buy it.

(I do share your concern about the missing change log. I do not share your attitude)

There is a serious issue with the approach taken by RTCOA wrt to pushing FW updates.
If the update were to fail & my A/C for some reason were to continue running (a problem I have had BTW due to failed electronics in the fan control) whose liability is it if I can longer validate operation?

Moreover, I cannot think of one other case where I allow any vendor into my premise to change any device without my explicit permission.
There is a legal issue here.
Seems to me that there should be an opt in option for FW updates - allow them by permission or not.
And again, I am not against updating FW - I just want to do it when I am present.

WRT to your comment about about not buying it...well, that would be great if all the info was available up-front, but it is not. Where on the packaging does it say that FW updates will be pushed to my tstat?

Unfortunately there are plenty of precedents for that kind of behavior. For example Google, Apple, Amazon all reserve the right to manipulate your Android device, iDevice, or Kindle as they see fit, and without asking you for permission (google "kill switch"). There's that endless discussion on the interwebs about "owning vs. licensing".

The good thing (relatively speaking) with RTCOA is that the thermostats have to initiate the communication. If you blank out the authkey and control the stats with your own program (as I do) then you have full control over if/when you accept firmware updates.
